It will come as no surprise that the life of street cats is hard. A life that creates victims.
A paralyzed cat that drags itself along on the street has a higher chance than the average street cat of coming to the attention of Safe Haven Egypt and similar organizations. A hard truth.
Some cats that come into Haven as paralyzed cats make a full or major recovery. Typically these are cats that had a vitamin deficiency.
Cats that do not get better or sufficiently better typically have a problem with their rear end. They cannot walk around on their hind legs and drag themselves along with their front legs.
There are three categories of paralyzed cats:
- Cat with paralysis that can still support itself and stand on a hind leg and can use a litter box independently
- Cat with paralysis who cannot use a regular litter box. But can do the business autonomously 'puppy training wipes' or similar solution without edges
- Cat with paralysis that needs active assistance to defecate. Usually this is limited to emptying the bladder. Assistance to defecate may also be necessary in some cats.
